This is How it All Began

MAY 1989

Though they don’t remember it, Aubrey and Mike met for the first time in Kemah, Texas; they were born only 11 days apart.

Their fathers met in drafting school years earlier and the two became fast friends. From then on their families kept in touch, even when Mike’s family moved to the Dallas area.

Summer 1994

On their road trip to Colorado, Aubrey and her parents stopped in Richardson to visit Mike’s family. Aubrey and Mike met again – and again they don’t remember this meeting, or the handful of other times the families visited one another during this time period.

July 2007

After seeing Aubrey’s high school graduation photo on their fridge, Mike emailed Aubrey saying he’d heard their families’ stories and  seen photos of them together, and that he’d like to meet her in person. Mike would be attending Texas A&M Galveston, near her hometown and would be in the area for orientation. Aubrey agreed to meet.

They Met...Again

AUGUST 19, 2007

Aubrey and Mike met for the first time they actually remember. They had lunch at Aubrey’s favorite local barbecue joint, T-Bone Tom’s, and became instant friends. The day was captured in an incredibly awkward photo that was insisted upon by Aubrey’s mom. The only thing more awkward was that Mike was wearing Crocs when this photo was taken.

August 2007

Just as soon as they met they were apart again. Later that August Mike started school at Texas A&M Galveston, and Aubrey moved away to Austin to start school at University of Texas. The two kept in touch occasionally via email and Facebook during the school year and while Mike spent his summers on his training cruises.

OCTOBER 1, 2011

Mike began his job as a Mate and Navigation Officer on a ship supplying the Navy and was at sea for a very, very long time. It was 257 days to be exact. The two still exchanged emails frequently; Mike described all the amazing places he had visited and Aubrey told stories about how she was adjusting to the big city after growing up in a small town.

AUGUST, 2011

After graduation and a summer internship, Aubrey was hired on as an Art Director at an advertising agency in San Francisco and officially moved to California. Mike graduated as well and started his eight weeks of training in Virginia and New Jersey for his job as a Mate on cargo ships.

April 2012

It was during a late night IM chat when Aubrey was complaining about another horrible date she had just experienced, that Mike decided he was going to San Francisco to take Aubrey out on a proper date once he finished his time at sea.

The First Date

JUNE 15, 2012

Mike called Aubrey and told her he happened to have an extended layover in San Francisco on his way back from Japan and wanted to know if she’d like to go to dinner. Aubrey thought it was odd he was having such a hard time getting a flight, but agreed.

They spent the evening laughing over dinner and cocktails. Maybe it was because it was one of the best dates either of them had ever had, or that Aubrey was the first woman he’d seen in nearly a year, but Mike decided that he was going to move to the Bay Area to see if anything could happen between the two of them.

June 20, 2012

Mike was hired on at a new company as a Second Mate, Navigation and Cargo Officer on a ship supplying the oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico. The new job gave him a schedule where he wasn’t at sea for extended time and the flexibility to live wherever he wanted.

July 25, 2012

Mike officially moved to Oakland, California. The two saw one another occasionally on weekends to see a movie or go for a hike when Mike wasn't on the boat.

Slowly the two began to spend more and more time together and drifted into being more than just friends. Neither of them remember when they actually started dating.

March 10, 2013

After only a few months of dating the two moved in together. It seemed too quick for some, but they were sure it was the right thing to do.

July 16, 2012

Mike signed a lease for apartment he’d never even seen; a risky thing to do in Oakland. Aubrey dismissed any thought that he might have been moving there for her because that kind of thing didn’t happen in real life.

August 8, 2012

Mike took Aubrey to Redwood Regional Park for a hike. When they stopped for a break he handed Aubrey a sandwich, telling her not to worry because he bought her a "non-slippery" sandwich (one without condiments or pickles). She hadn't mentioned this idiosyncrasy in years.

Though it was a small gesture, it was then she knew that Mike loved her. Aubrey took a photo looking directly up from where they were sitting during that picnic.

December 2013

The two spent Christmas with Aubrey's family and New Year's with Mike's. It was the first time Aubrey had seen Mike's family since she was a little girl. The trip was a success and Mike took her to look at engagement rings the week after they returned home.

The Proposal

APRIL 19, 2014

Mike took Aubrey to Grizzly Peak, their favorite scenic outlook of San Francisco Bay, where they went during the summer to watch the sunset. It was impossible to see anything with all the fog, but Mike insisted they stay for the picnic they had packed. Aubrey was immediately suspicious. The fog broke up just in time for a beautiful sunset, and Mike proposed with a gorgeous ring. Aubrey, without a doubt,  said yes.
